Kadosh

A FILM BY Amos Gitai

Synopsis

Set in Mea Shearim, the ultra-orthodox Jewish quarter of Jerusalem, Kadosh is a stirring, intimate and sensual portrait of two sisters torn between their love and the ultra-orthodox faith that sustains them. Rivka is a pious and devoted wife who has been passionately married for ten years to Meir, the man she adores. Unfortunately, the couple has not produced any children. Presumed to be barren by her rabbi, Rivka's husband is pressured to leave her for a new wife chosen by the rabbi. Meanwhile, Rivka's younger sister, Malka, is in love with a man who has left the community to live in Israel's modern secular society. Not wishing to leave the only world she has ever known, Malka agrees to marry the man the rabbi has chosen for her. Unfortunately, he turns out to be a brute who treats her terribly. Soon, both sisters are forced to weigh their deep faith and belief in the customs and authority that governs their lives against their emotional needs and sexual desires.
