Chinese Box

synopsis

Acclaimed director Wayne Wang (Smoke, Blue in the face, The Joy Luck Club) returns to his native Hong Kong to tell the story of several star-crossed lovers just before the island's takeover by China. There is John, a dying British journalist who has lived in Hong Kong for the past 20 years, deeply in love with Vivian, a Chinese bar hostess turned nightclub owner. There is Chang, Vivian's lover and a rising figure among Hong Kong's new power brokers. There is Jean, a street-wise young punk who hustles tourists to survive. Six months remain before the return of Hong Kong to Chinese rule. During this time of apprehension, excitement and fear, these lives will become intimately intertwined in a passionate, exotic tale of hope, pain and self-discovery.
