synopsis

To the boisterous, gaslit London of the 1860's came Joe Sanders and his brother Fred to seek their fortunes. They came from Leybourne in Yorkshire, where Fred was a local prizefighter. At the old Elephant and Castle Joe contrived an interview with Tom Sayers, the boxing champion. Fred was given a tryout. But he failed to impress the champion and returned home. Joe remained at the Elephant, engaged as a singer and went on to success.
