synopsis

We first meet Stanley Windrush at his 'medical' when the MO gently enquires 'You are not a mermaid, are you?', and follow his erratic, out-of-step progress through Gravestone Camp, where his singular lack of prowess at the military arts almost drives his instructor to apoplexy. Next he is posted to a languages course where he learns Japanese - and is promptly sent on an operation which necessitates a fluency in German...
